Gathering is built on collaboration and connection. More than a gallery, it is an artist-centred space that seeks to stage experiences of museum quality while remaining alive to the spirit of the contemporary world. At its core, it is about bringing people together – artists, audiences and communities – to share, converse and encounter art as a living reflection of who we are.
Before founding Gathering, Alex Flick worked with Paul McCarthy, contributed to the global expansion of Hauser & Wirth and later established UNIT9, an experimental project space dedicated to artistic freedom and risk-taking. When UNIT9 closed pre-pandemic, it opened the way for Gathering: a new kind of gallery that reflects both a distinct curatorial vision and a belief that art should be experienced freely, in dialogue with the present.
Gathering launched in 2022 in the heart of Soho with an inaugural exhibition by joint Turner-Prize winning artist Tai Shani. Since its formation, the gallery has expanded to Ibiza and Cologne, locations with personal and familial ties for Flick, carrying the cutting-edge programming and artist-led ethos of Gathering to an international scale. Situated in Ibiza’s quieter northern half, Gathering Ibiza unites the energy of the island with the demand for a thriving art scene. Expansion continued to Cologne through the collaborative ethos of ECHO Cologne, a shared exhibition space dedicated to engaging in and contributing to the local context. Gathering Cologne taps into the legacy of a city steeped in cultural history whilst contributing to its next chapter.
Alongside this growth, Gathering’s project space Glasshouse bridges the rigorous standards of the commercial art world with the experimental and countercultural sensibility of emerging artists. Gathering also maintains a publication series in collaboration with Christopher Lawson offering further critical insights into its artists’ practices.
Gathering’s growing roster of international artists includes Stefan Brüggemann, Emanuel de Carvalho, Tamara K.E., Soojin Kang, Ndayé Kouagou, Wynnie Mynerva, Tai Shani and Oda Iselin Sønderland.
Our microgallery Glasshouse presents a fluid approach to programming, fostering emergent creative practitioners alongside Gathering’s main exhibitions. Expanding outwards from the gallery’s Viewing Room space, Glasshouse encompasses exhibitions, performances and events from artists and creatives at a wide range of career stages.
